If a family decides to welcome a new dog, purebred puppies are always the top choice. While saddening, this scenario is a typical scene. As a result, dogs in animal shelters get outshined and take longer than usual before finding an adopter.
Mika is no stranger to this situation, as she waited three years before her story of adoption happened. It became difficult for the pup to get adopted because she is not a purebred. Worst, the dog is also deaf, so many potential adopters ended up not choosing her.
The dog got rescued from her previous owners, who did not treat the pup well. According to the dog’s rescuers, Mika’s former owners did not know that the dog was deaf. Upon learning the dog’s disability, the previous owners contacted a local animal shelter. The former owners told the shelter to get the pup from their house.
The rescuers pitied the pooch because her condition should not be a factor why adopters adopt pets. Nevertheless, the rescuers could not do anything because the previous owners had their preferences.
When they brought Mika to the animal shelter, the volunteers knew that the dog’s chance at adoption is slim. This is why they brought her to Jessy Stephenson, one of the founders of Anarchy Animal Rescue.
The shelter that Jessy heads caters to dogs with special needs, so she did not hesitate to take Mika when she learned about the pup. At the shelter, Jessy taught the pooch skills she could use. This includes doing the “I love you” hand sign.
It took a while before Mika mastered the skill, but with Jessy’s perseverance, the dog learned it. Jessy said that dogs with special needs are trainable because their other senses are still functional. Jessy knew this because she has dealt with several dogs like Mika in the past.
