A lioness named Sirona recently gave birth to two lion cubs at a wildlife park in Russia. But unlike most mothers, Sirona had no interest in caring for her babies. So, the staff decided to take the cubs away from their mother and allow Sasha, a German shepherd, to care for them instead.
Rejected cubs
Most women welcome motherhood with so much joy and anticipation. But not Sirona. When Sirona gave birth to her two cubs, she didn’t dote on them as most mothers would. She did not show them affection, refused to feed them, and at one point, even hurt her babies.
The staff at the wildlife park observed that Sirona was aloof and secretive. Her refusal to care for her cubs resulted in malnourishment and dehydration of her cubs. They were worried over Sirona’s unnatural behavior and feared for the lives of her cubs.
Sasha saves the day
The wildlife park staff decided to take out the cubs away from Sirona and place them in foster care. While wondering who the perfect foster parent for the tiny lions would be, the staff thought of Sasha.
Sasha is a German shepherd who also just recently delivered one puppy. In the past, she delivered eight pups, so the staff knew that Sasha could produce milk for the two cubs. Sasha’s heart melted right away when she saw the cubs’ condition. Sasha welcomed the cubs warmly and let them suckle for as long as they want. She even groomed the cubs beside her own pup and looked after them like they were her own.
Over the next following days, the cubs grew healthier and stronger. Sasha knows that time will come when her adopted babies will no longer need her. But for Sasha, she will always be the mother they never had, for as long as they need her. Look how Sasha lovingly and dutifully looks after her lion cubs in the video below.
