Nicole Elliot of Columbus, Georgia said she knew right away she wanted to adopt Chester, a senior rescue dog with terminal cancer. She intended to take him on a fun journey to make the most of his remaining time on Earth.
The passionate animal rescue advocate first saw Chester’s photo while she was browsing through the Facebook page of Animal Ark Rescue. The senior dog was rescued in April from a high kill shelter after his owners surrendered him. They needed someone else to take care of him in his finals days because of a massive tumor that he has on the top of his head.
According to Elliot, she decided to make a bucket list before going to get Chester. Elliot immediately began Chester’s final adventure with Nathan’s hot dog lunch, a visit to a water stream, and a doggy shopping spree.
They got a new bed, toys, and treats. Elliot also wants to take him on a boat excursion, to the beach, and to have him photographed by a professional photographer. Elliot has been documenting Chester’s experience on a Facebook page she set up for him, as well as a contribution site for Animal Ark Rescue since they began.
Elliot expressed her hope that it will raise awareness for animals that have a lower chance of finding homes before passing. She added that her ultimate goal was to inspire and urge people to adopt shelter animals that are less likely to be adopted, such as elderly animals or those who are terminally sick. She went on to say that all animals should be given the opportunity to have a happy life.
According to Elliot, Veterinarians are unsure how much time Chester has left. In the meantime, she intends to continue adopting elderly and sick animals with the aim of bringing joy into their lives.
