A woman named Ariana was driving back home when she saw a black dog by the side of the road. She pulled over to help but the pup ran into the woods quickly. She followed her but Betsy the dog just stared at her from a safe distance.
Betsy was so skinny so Arianna knew she starved. She asked her husband to grab some cheeseburger and see if it will do the trick and lure the dog toward them. While the dog was so hungry that she ate from the rescuer’s hand, she refused to let her touch her.
Ariana came back to the same spot to feed Betsy. She did it twice a day, during breakfast and dinner, for three months. But like the first time, the dog kept her distance.
The rescuer knew she’s slowly gaining the dog’s trust. When she and her husband went on their hikes, the pup tagged along with them. She was happy to see her but Betsy remained wary of people.
Days quickly passed and Ariana knew they had to do something already or they may never capture the dog at all. They set up a big cage and placed food inside, but Betsy knew not to walk into it. She was extra careful not to get caught in the trap.
It took a couple of days before Ariana managed to get Betsy into the cage. When she finally caught her, the dog panicked. But once she realized she was there, she instantly calmed down.
Ariana sought assistance from the humane society in their town to get Betsy home. At that point, they already had four dogs, and adding another one seemed too much. But she realized she already shared a bond with her and there’s no way she’s letting her go anywhere else.
All Betsy needed was lots of patience and time. She felt comfortable with her new family right away. Her dog siblings helped her adjust to her new life and she’s grateful for everything they’ve done for her.
