The dog population all over the world continues to rise due to a lack of supervision and ownership. Street dogs are one thing but those in puppy mills are a completely different story, and it’s much worse.
A puppy mill is basically a dog breeding facility that is not an appropriate environment for dogs because it is downright inhumane.
It is a suffering for dogs, being cooped up in a tight cage, with no proper meals and grooming. And it seems like a dog’s sole purpose is to bear puppies for human profit.
A Maltese named Lamb Chop is one of the countless dogs that has suffered this fate. The first six years of Lamb Chop’s life were spent in a mill where she had already given birth to multiple litters.
In December 2014, she was lucky enough to be rescued and had the chance to be in a family thanks to Christin Schubert from Milwaukee. Christin’s first course of action for Lamb Chop was to have her checked.
Upon inspection, the local veterinarians decided to remove all of her teeth due to decay. This was only one of the ugly results of her time in the mill. She also suffered from tumors and cauliflower ear which affected her hearing.
Christin wanted to bring her home so bad but was compelled to leave the poor dog in the doctors’ hands for a while to have her surgery, funded by the Washington County Humane Society.
Most dogs that are born in puppy mills are not very sociable, and Lamb Chop was no different. At first, she was nervous to be with people because she wasn’t used to them.
But with the help of classes and training, Lamb Chop slowly came out of her shell and started to trust them.
As a way to share the dog’s story, Christin decided to enter Lamb Chop in People Magazine’s search for the Cutest Rescue Dog in 2020.
Over 10,000 dogs have joined, but Lamb Chop garnered the honor, and Christin couldn’t be happier for her.
At times, Christin would look at Lamb Chop and could not help thinking about her past and the suffering that came with it. But she’s glad that Lamb Chop is a happy dog now, provided with tons of love, care, and support.
The title ‘cutest dog’ suits her because she’s tiny and adorable. But behind this cuteness is a lot of resiliency.
She may be deaf and toothless but what matters is that she can make the rest of her life joyful with people who love her.
Since then, Christin has become an advocate for pet adoption. She also hopes that the puppy mill industry will be dissolved because she believes that it is not how dogs or any animal, for that matter, should be treated.
