Jason Betschart is no ordinary four-year-old boy. While most kids his age would have set their sights on their favorite toys or games, Jason had a different plan.
Many kids have saved up their birthday and Christmas money, and when they finally decide to spend it, you can be sure that the toy store would be their destination, Jason chose to spend it on shelter dogs.
Jason and his mom, Elyse, went one weekend to the Charleston Animal Society shelter to see the dogs that were staying there and choose which ones to sponsor. Elyse let Jason which dogs he wanted.
The first dog that Jason saw was a pooch named Penelope. Jason even gave her a new nickname, Spots, because of the black patches on her white fur.
The next dog that the boy saw was a big Pit Bull mix appropriately named Tank. Jason got excited over Tank. He loved the dog’s muscular frame and his block-shaped head.
Jason asked his mom if he could adopt Tank because he wanted to play “Hulk” with him. But unfortunately, they could not adopt a dog at that time.
The generous young sponsor
They then decided just to do the next best thing, sponsor them. Under the sponsorship program of the CAS, donors can pay the adoption fee of any specific dog that is in the shelter. The fee will include a microchip, vaccines, spaying or neutering, flea prevention, and heartworm treatment if the dog needs it. This sponsorship will help potential adopters buy food and supplies for the dogs.
After paying for their sponsorship at the front desk, Jason got a certificate, which showed that he was the sponsor and Guardian Angel of the two dogs. Jason even got a picture of him holding his certificate in front of Tank’s cage.
The photo of the adorable boy holding the certificate was posted on the Facebook page of CAS, and it quickly became viral.
A lot of people were inspired to donate to the shelter and also pay for sponsorship. There was also a rise in the adoption of the dogs. In fact, Penelope and Tank were adopted soon after the post became viral. This just goes to show that a simple act of kindness can go a very long way.
