A three-year-old dog named Dallas is one of 32 pit bulls rescued from a dogfighting ring operating in Ontario, Canada.
The local shelter was informed of the illegal activity and they launched an investigation. What they learned was horrifying.
After securing a warrant, the authorities went to rescue the dogs and were crushed to see the deplorable way they were living. Most of the dogs had new and old wounds, indicative of the vicious and bloody fights they were subjected to. The place was filthy, and it was apparent that they were raised for profitable reasons only.
The operators were arrested and charged. After a long court battle, the dogs were finally available to be put up for adoption.
Undergoing training
Dallas was taken by a nonprofit group from Florida called Pit Sisters. The shelter staff noticed that the pooch had all the characteristics that made him a good candidate for a K9 officer. So he was placed in a six-week training program and was then sent to Honaker, Virginia. He became the town’s first narcotics sniffing dog.
According to his trainer, Dallas is expected to save many lives. He further stated that for every brick of narcotics that the dog takes off the streets, a thousand people would be prevented from ruining their future.
Loving pooch
When Dallas moved to the Honaker Police Department, he was paired with officer Cody Rowe, an experienced K9 handler. He said he had never worked with pit bulls, mostly German Shepherds, and he was amazed at Dallas’s effectiveness.
The officers welcomed the dog warmly, and Dallas responded well. When he is not on official duty, he is a warm and friendly dog that shows no indication of his violent past. He is making a lot of friends and is turning into a beloved and well-respected member of their community.
