Russia’s invasion of Ukraine resulted in thousands of properties being destroyed and millions of people displaced. Many buildings were targeted by Russian missiles and artillery strikes, including apartment buildings and private homes. Some of the buildings that were bombed remain standing but are unsafe for people to live in.
Aside from the millions of people being left homeless by the senseless war, there are also dogs and other animals that are suffering and trying to survive. During one missile track back in June, a building in the city of Mykolaiv was hit.
The apartment wasn’t completely destroyed but people living in the building were trapped. One of the trapped victims was a dog. The rescuers were unable to reach the dog through the building since the damage was extensive and the stairwell to the unit where the dog lived was not passable.
Clearing the debris was unsafe since it could trigger the building to collapse. The rescuers needed to think of a different way to rescue the trapped dog in the apartment. Thankfully, the firefighters were able to create a hole through the destroyed wall of the apartment that would serve as a passage for the dog to reach the crane.
Rescuers dangled a few feet off the ground on the crane and started to get the dog to hop onto the crane. Thankfully, the dog wasn’t scared of the rescuers. It seems that the dog knew that he was being rescued. There was a bit of hesitation for the dog to jump inside the crane but the rescuers were able to pull the dog in.
After securing the dog in the crane, the crane was lowered to the ground, where other firefighters were waiting. The brave firefighters and animal rescuers in Ukraine are continuing to save lives amidst the chaos. The dog rescued from the bombed apartment building was eventually reunited with his owner. Here’s a video showing the heart-stopping rescue.
