A dog named Baekok has always been a happy and playful pup. But when heavy rain poured one night, he started to act strange. He trembled for no apparent reason and he refused to sleep at night.
The dog’s human parents thought the thunderstorm terrified Baekok so much that he no longer wanted to sleep. Before long, however, they noticed that he acted the same even when the weather was good. Hence, the couple assumed their dog had insomnia.
For the next month after the thunderstorm, Baekuk kept himself fully awake at night. He roamed around the house and walked in circles all the time. He was supposed to feel exhausted after a long night, but still, he didn’t go to sleep come morning.
The longest that Baekok took naps was no more than an hour each day. But even when his eyes were shut, he kept his head high. He wasn’t completely relaxed and his parents had no idea why. They started to worry about his well-being so they decided to seek help from the experts.
A vet ordered various tests but found nothing physically wrong with the dog. The issue must be with his mental state, his parents assumed, so they proceeded to work with Lee Chan Jong, an animal behavior expert. They wanted to hear good news but they were stunned by what he had to say.
Nothing was wrong with Baekok. He was physically and mentally stable. He was never afraid of loud noise brought about by thunderstorms and he never hated the outdoors. If any, he wanted to always go outside.
Baekok tricked his mom and dad into thinking that something was wrong with him. He put on an act to get what he wanted, but not for so long. With Lee’s guidance, his parents worked hard and corrected his mischievous behavior.
After a month, Baekok found no more reason not to go to sleep. He learned his limits, and he realized that taking naps and deep sleep can be as good as playing outside.
