Viktor Larkhill, the founder of the charitable group Let Adopt International, received a disturbing call that needed his urgent response. According to the Good Samaritan he spoke with, a dog was kept in a horrendous state and the worst could happen to it anytime. So he quickly gathered up his team and responded.
The rescuers arrived at a residential property, where they met a dog named Elektra. They couldn’t fathom how she was still alive but they were glad that she was and that they came on time. They had absolutely no second to waste so they rushed her to the emergency animal care in town.
Elektra, a Saint Bernard, was supposed to weigh between 120 and 140 pounds, but she only weighed 55 pounds. She starved for so long which caused her to lose her body fat and muscle mass. She was so vulnerable and wobbly that she could barely carry her own weight.
An extensive examination also revealed the dog suffers from dry eyes, very low blood count, swollen toes and legs, bad teeth and gums, and very poor eyesight. She was neglected for so long, probably her entire life. She was a complete mess and she was literally knocking at death’s door.
The vets quickly started the dog’s treatment by hooking her up into an IV. They stabilized her, fed her, gave her some water, and provided her with some pain killers to ease her discomfort.
Elektra’s condition was touch and go. But two weeks into treatment and her progress was already noticeable. She added a few pounds, improved her blood levels, and managed to carry her weight and walk on her own.
The dog is blind but her disability does not stop her from doing the things she’s never done before. She navigates her foster home easily, uses the stairs without falling, and located the garden without a fuss. She’s slowly learning to live a normal life and she’s happy she’s getting all the help she needs.
It will take a few more weeks, possibly months, before Elektra gets her medical clearance. But with how fast she’s recuperating, she will surely get there sooner than expected.
