Sergeant Jake Woodward lives in Cortland, Nebraska, and is also from the Army National Guard Aviation Unit. When they deployed him and 33 other soldiers to Syria to provide Medevac services, he didn’t expect to make a furry little friend along the way.
Just outside of their base, they found a small doggie named Sam and brought her inside. When Jake saw that the pup’s condition wasn’t too good, he decided to take care of her until she gets better. He brought her inside his tent and fed her dehydrated milk with a syringe. He also made her bed out of a cardboard box, filled it with a few blankets to keep her comfortable, and placed it underneath his bed.
Jake wanted Sam to be a good girl when she grows up, so he took her out on little trips everywhere they go, and she loves it. Wherever he goes, she follows. With the time they spend together, they became inseparable. Immediately, he adopted her and considered her like family.
When it was time for Jake to leave Syria and go back home, he knew he couldn’t leave his pet doggie behind. He made arrangements for her to travel through the Society Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International in Iraq. There they were able to schedule her a flight from Iraq to the US.
Luckily, the two managed to fly home right before the CDC bans the importation of dogs from different countries to the US. And Syria was one of them.
Now, Sam is no longer a puppy but a grown and playful canine who loves to roll on grass. Even though she’s still getting used to her new environment, either way, she enjoys it. To Jake, having her in his life is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
